How nature can strengthen Greater Sydney’s flood resilience

Events all week
Greater Sydney faces severe flooding risks as seen in the recent Hawkesbury-Nepean floods, with increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events threatening lives and livelihoods. While decarbonisation remains critical, resilience and adaptation strategies are equally vital. Nature-based solutions offer a compelling path forward, addressing flood risks while enhancing biodiversity and supporting ecosystems. By protecting, restoring, or sustainably managing ecosystems, nature-based solutions tackle both the climate and ecological crises creating safer and more sustainable cities. This event launches a new report that engaged with diverse stakeholders to understand how green and blue infrastructure can transform flood risk management in Greater Sydney. The panel discussion brings together experts from civil society, private industry, government, and research to discuss the report’s findings and share insights from their fields. Discover how nature-based solutions can be integrated into urban and coastal planning to build resilience and improve ecological health whilst balancing competing demands for land use. Learn from successful projects, understand the challenges, and explore practical strategies to implement these solutions at scale . Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with thought leaders, contribute to the conversation, and help shape a resilient and sustainable future for Greater Sydney. Potential speakers: • Chair: Sam Kernaghan, Director of Resilience, Committee for Sydney • University of Sydney researcher (TBC) • The Hon Jihad Dib MP, NSW Minister for Emergency Services (TBC) • Beck Dawson, Executive Director – Adaptation and Mitigation, NSW Reconstruction Authority (TBC) • Local Government representative from Greater Sydney (TBC) • Nature-based solutions expert from AECOM (TBC)

Cooking chinese food with induction

Events all week
Many cultures, particularly in Asian communities, have a long-standing tradition of cooking with gas, believing it is essential for achieving authentic flavors in dishes like stir-fries and other Chinese cuisine. However, there are growing concerns about the health and environmental impacts of cooking with gas. Join Willoughby City Council and Asian Australians for Climate Solutions for an enlightening session on "Cooking Chinese Food with Induction," where you’ll explore the benefits of switching from gas to induction cooking. This engaging workshop will be led by practising medical professionals who will discuss the health risks associated with cooking on gas, such as indoor air pollution and safety. Discover how induction cooktops provide a safer and cleaner alternative to gas, offering precise heat control without the open flame, which can be a hazard in the kitchen. We’ll tackle common misconceptions and roadblocks, such as the belief that induction can’t achieve the signature "wok hei" (breath of the flame) needed for the perfect stir-fry. You’ll also gain practical advice on converting your kitchen to induction, from necessary electrical requirements to suitable cookware. The session will feature a live cooking demonstration, followed by a Q&A session, where you can have your questions answered. Participants will enjoy tasting authentic Chinese dishes that are cooked at the session. Mandarin interpretation will be available. Take the step towards healthier, safer, and more sustainable cooking with us!
